Amazon.com Shipping Info & Costs

An important fact about Next Day Shipping:

  • Upgrading to Next Day Air does NOT mean you'll get your order the next day. Upgrading to Next Day or Second Day Air does not change how long it takes us to ship your order -- it only reduces the travel time after the book leaves our warehouse. For example, an item marked as "usually shipped within 2 to 3 days" and upgraded to Next Day Air will usually leave our warehouse on the second or third day and reach you on the third or fourth day.

How many shipments will we make to satisfy an order?

  • If you select the "Make one shipment when complete order is ready" option on the order form, we wait until we have all the books in your order before shipping any of them. For example, if you place an order for two books, one marked as "usually shipped within 2 to 3 days" and the other marked "Special Order: usually shipped within 4 to 6 weeks," we hold shipment of the first book until the special order book is available, at which time we ship both books to you in one package. You can avoid any delay by selecting the "Ship as ordered books become available" option on the order form, or by placing separate orders for books in different "availability categories."
  • If you select the "Ship as ordered books become available" option on the order form, your shipping charges will be higher, but if you order books in multiple "availability categories," we will ship the more readily available books sooner. If you select this option, we make an effort to ship books as soon as we obtain them, while at the same time not making any more shipments than necessary (since that will save you some money).

An important note about shipping to Puerto Rico, Guam, and all U.S. Protectorates:

Packages to Puerto Rico, Guam, and all U.S. protectorates may be shipped only via U.S. standard shipping or, for priority mail, via DHL Express International. This means that for standard shipping, these addresses are considered U.S. addresses, and for priority mail, these addresses are international.

Standard Shipping in the U.S., including AK, HI, PR, USVI, APO/FPO

Standard shipping charges are $3 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Once your order leaves our warehouse, shipping times typically range from 3 to 7 days. You can also choose from two faster shipping options:

Second Day Air in the U.S.

Second day shipping by UPS is $6 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Second Day Air to PO Boxes, AK, HI, PR, USVI, and APO/FPO addresses is not available.

Next Day Air in the U.S.

Next day shipping by Airborne Express is $8 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Add an additional $15 per shipment for next day air to AK or HI. Next Day Air is not available to PO Boxes or APO/FPO addresses.

Standard Shipping to Countries other than the U.S.

Standard shipping charges to countries other than the U.S. are $4 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Once your order leaves our warehouse, shipping times typically range from 2 to 10 weeks, depending on destination. (For example: standard shipments take about 2-3 weeks to Canada, 6 weeks to the U.K., 6-8 weeks to Japan and Australia, and 10-12 weeks to Brazil, to name a few.)

WorldMail to Countries other than the U.S.

WorldMail packages are sent via airmail to the destination country and are then delivered by the local postal system. WorldMail is a service of DHL, and offers faster shipping times than Standard Shipping, at much lower prices than DHL Express Shipping. WorldMail charges are $7 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Once your order leaves our warehouse, shipping times typically range from 7 to 14 business days, depending on destination.

Note: WorldMail can be sent to PO boxes.

DHL Express Shipping to Countries other than the U.S., plus PR, Guam, and U.S. Protectorates

Priority shipping by DHL Express to countries other than the U.S., along with Puerto Rico, Guam, and all U.S. Protectorates is $30 per shipment plus a per-book charge of . Once your order leaves our warehouse, shipping times typically range from 1 to 4 business days, depending on destination.

Note: DHL Express cannot be sent to PO boxes.

Amazon.com Credit Card and Payment Information

Credit Card Security

In an article by Rob Pegoraro in The Washington Post's "Fast Forward" magazine (May 1996), spokesmen for MasterCard International and AT&T's Universal Card acknowledged that to date, they knew of no cases of Internet credit card fraud. Statistically, it's much safer to use your credit card on the Web than to use it in a restaurant or department store. We think that's good news, but we still take every possible precaution to protect the integrity of your credit card information.

We offer you the choice of using the Netscape Secure Commerce Server, which encrypts any information you type in. You can safely enter your entire credit card number on the secure server, and it cannot be read in transit.

Of course, you can use the secure server even if you want to pay by check or enter only the last five digits of your card number. Remember, if you choose the secure server, all the information you enter on the order form--name, address, phone number, etc.--is safely encrypted.

Payment Options

We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and checks or money orders denominated in U.S. dollars as payment for book orders.

There are two ways you can order from us without having to enter your complete credit card number on the Web:

  1. Paying by check or postal money order
You can select "pay by check or money order" on the order form, and send us a personal check or postal money order in U.S. dollars for the amount of your order. Paying by check does slow down your order somewhat, as we don't order your books until your check is received, and we don't ship the books to you until your funds clear. If you are in the United States, paying by personal check typically delays your order about seven to ten days.
  2. Calling or faxing your card number
We have a way for you to use your credit card without ever having to enter the complete number on the Internet. When filling out the order form, you can enter just the last five digits and the expiration date of your credit card on the order form. This gives us a way to track your order but guarantees your security. Then you can call or fax us to give us the rest of your credit card number. You can do this even if you can't use our secure server, and your credit card number will be totally protected.

      Phone:

      (800) 201-7575 (toll-free in the USA and Canada)
      (206) 346-2992 (outside the USA and Canada)

      Fax:

      (206) 346-2950

To give you an additional layer of security, all credit card numbers are stored on a computer that is not connected to the Internet. After you type it in, fax it in, or call it in, your complete credit card number is transferred to this secure machine across a proprietary one-way interface. This computer is not accessible by network or modem, and the number is not stored anywhere else.

We do not now sell or rent our list of customers to anyone. If you would like to make sure we never sell or rent information about you to third parties, just send e-mail to never@amazon.com.

Amazon.com Pricing and Availability

Our Price Structure

We offer you consistently low prices. We discount hardcover and paperback bestsellers a full 30%. Other featured titles are discounted 15%-30%. Other books (including paperbacks) are 10% off the publishers' prices, except for textbooks and especially obscure books.

When We Charge Your Card

We don't charge your credit card until we ship your order. If you've paid by check and we owe you a full or partial refund, we will send a refund check for the correct amount immediately.

What We Do About Mispricings...

Despite our best efforts, a small number of the more than one million items in our catalog are mispriced. Rest assured, however, that we verify prices as part of our shipping procedures.

  • If a book's correct price is lower than our stated price, we charge the lower amount and ship you the book.
  • If a book's correct price is higher than our stated price, we contact you for instructions before shipping.

Confirming Availability and Price

Availability information for the books in our catalog is listed on each book's detail page. Some items are marked as "Special Orders." These items usually leave our warehouse about 4 to 6 weeks after you place your order. Beyond what we say on the Web pages, we cannot be more specific about availability. As we process your order, we will inform you by e-mail if any items you order turn out to be unavailable.

We can't confirm the price until you order the book, but please note that we do NOT charge credit cards until the date we ship your order to you!
